Syracuse midfielder Sam English was added to the Men’s Tewaaraton Award Watch List Thursday, joining defenseman Billy Dwan III and attackmen Owen Hiltz and Joey Spallina — who were all preseason nominees.

English has scored seven goals and dished out three assists through the Orange’s first six games, in which they’ve gotten out to a 4-2 start and No. 11 national ranking. English’s top performance of the season came on Feb. 22 against Harvard, pulling out a hat trick despite SU’s 15-14 upset loss.

The graduate student’s shooting percentage sits at .233, as his best has yet to be seen on the attacking end. But English has been stout defensively, causing four turnovers and picking up 15 ground balls, which ranks second on the Orange of players other than John Mullen — who leads them with 54.

Syracuse needs English to continue excelling as a two-way midfielder. His fifth-year experience and increased locker-room presence had teammates hailing him preseason as the captain of the Orange’s ship. For SU to escape its mini-rut that it’s in right now, it’ll look to English to provide a further boost to both its array of scorers and group of stout defenders.

“I think he’s ready to try to prove himself,” Syracuse offensive coordinator Pat March said of English heading into the 2025 campaign. “He’s very well established, but I also think that, obviously, he wants to be holding that trophy up at the end of the year.”
